4. Long Meadow Park
The East End neighborhood transformed from old farmland in the late 1890s to cater to Durham’s growing industrial workforce. Unique buildings sprung up here too like the striking stone and mortar building from 1925 at Gilbert Street and N. Alston Avenue corner which started off as stables for fire engine horses! In 1932, local philanthropists John Sprunt Hill and Annie Watts Hill donated land along Goose Creek to form two parks: East End Park and Long Meadow Park. In 1937, thanks to Works Progress Administration funding, Long Meadow got its own swimming pool!

5. Forest Hills Park
Built in colonial revival style in 1928 (replacing an earlier clubhouse lost to fire), Forest Hills’ clubhouse has quite a history. When New Hope Realty Company went bankrupt during the Great Depression in ’29, John Sprunt Hill bought it all the golf course & clubhouse and turned it into Annie Hill’s Calvert Method School’s first home! By ’38, Hill had deeded everything over to the City on condition it be used as public library space; although by the early ’50s, this changed & it became solely a community center.
